Email accounts on your hosting
Email accounts (mailboxes) are created and managed in your hosting control panel. This guide covers creating a mailbox, reading mail in your browser, connecting an email app and keeping things tidy.
Create a mailbox
- Log in to your control panel and open the website the domain belongs to.
- Go to the Emails section.
- Choose to create a new email account.
- Enter the mailbox name — the part before the @, such as info or sarah.
- Set a password and save.
Choosing the name and password
- Pick names people can guess and spell: first names or roles like accounts and support work well.
- Use a long, unique password. Mailboxes are a favourite target, because a hacked mailbox can reset the passwords of everything else.
- Do not reuse the password from your control panel or any other account.
Read your mail in a browser (webmail)
Webmail lets you read and send email from any browser, without setting anything up. Open it from the Emails section of your control panel and sign in with the full email address and its password.
Connect an email app
To use Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird or your phone's mail app, you need the incoming and outgoing server details for your account. Use the details supplied for your hosting account — they can differ between servers, so do not copy settings from another provider's guide.
- Sign in with the full email address as the username.
- Choose IMAP if the app asks, so the same mail shows on every device.
- If you do not have the connection details to hand, open a ticket and we will send them.
Change a mailbox password
In the Emails section of the control panel, open the mailbox and set a new password. Remember to update the password in every app and phone that uses that mailbox, or they will keep failing to connect.
Using the Junk folder properly
- If an email you expected has not arrived, check Junk first.
- If a genuine email lands in Junk, mark it as not junk or move it back to your inbox.
- Glance through Junk before emptying it, in case something real is in there.
- For newsletters you no longer want, unsubscribe rather than marking them as junk.
Need a hand?
If an app will not connect or mail is not arriving, open a support ticket with the email address and what you are seeing. If you are setting up a brand-new domain, check the domain is pointing at your hosting first — mail will not arrive until it is.
