Adding a Website for a Customer
Your customers can add their own websites, but many will ask you to do it. The trick is to do it as the customer. If you add a website from your own Websites page, it's created in your account, and you'd have to move it over afterwards.
Before you start
- The customer needs a package with a free website slot. See Putting a Customer on a Package.
- Know the domain name the site will use.
Step 1: log in as the customer
Click Customers, click the three dots (⋮) on the customer, and choose Impersonate. The yellow bar at the top tells you it worked. See Logging In as Your Customer for more.
Step 2: open Add website
On the customer's Home page, click Add website. You can also go to Websites in the left-hand menu and click Add website.
Step 3: choose how to start
- Start from scratch gives you an empty website, ready for your files. Choose this if you're uploading a site or moving one in.
- Install an app installs WordPress, Joomla and other apps in a few clicks.
- Clone a website makes an exact copy of one of the customer's existing websites. It's greyed out if they don't have one yet.
If the customer has more than one package, choose the package at the top right of the form. It shows how many websites each package has used, for example "Starter (0 of 2 websites used)".
Step 4: enter the domain and add it
- Type the domain in the Domain box, such as example.co.za. There's no need to type www, because the panel adds it for you.
- Click Add.
Step 5: the website dashboard
After a few seconds, the new website's dashboard opens. Along the top you'll find Apps, Files, Databases, Emails, Domains, Analytics, Backups, Security and Advanced. The Quick links box has shortcuts to phpMyAdmin, webmail and backups.
Step 6: finish up
- Point the domain at us, using our nameservers or yours if you've set up your own.
- Put the site in place: install WordPress or upload files over FTP.
- Click Return to admin in the yellow bar when you're done.
Troubleshooting
- You added it to your own account by mistake. No harm done. Transfer it to the customer.
- The Add button stays greyed out. Check the domain is typed correctly and the package still has a free website slot.
