Moving a Website to Another Customer

Moving a Website to Another Customer

Sometimes a website needs a new owner. A client sells their business, an agency hands a finished site over, or a site got set up under the wrong customer. The panel calls this transferring ownership, and it takes about a minute.

Everything goes with the website: files, databases and all of its email accounts.

Before you start

  • The new owner must already exist as a customer. If they don't, add them first.
  • They need space on a package. The website uses up one of the websites allowed on the package you move it to.
  • The old owner loses access completely. That includes the email accounts on the site.
  • Cloudflare gets disconnected. If the site uses the Cloudflare integration, it's switched off during the transfer, and you'll need to connect it again afterwards.
  • Take a backup first. It's quick, and it's your safety net. See Taking and Restoring Backups.

Step 1: find the website

  1. Click Websites in the left-hand menu.
  2. Find the website in the list. The Organization column shows who owns it now. If the list is long, use the search icon at the top right.
The Manage websites page, listing each website with its organisation (owner) and size.

Step 2: open the transfer window

  1. Click the three dots () at the end of the website's row.
  2. Click Transfer ownership.

The same menu also has Suspend and Delete, so check you've clicked the right option.

The website menu open, showing Impersonate, Transfer ownership, Disable, Suspend and Delete.

Step 3: choose the new owner

  1. In Step 1 of 2, click the New owner list.
  2. Pick the customer the website is going to. Your own account is in the list too, marked Your organisation. The current owner isn't listed.
  3. Click Next.
Step 1 of the Transfer website ownership window, with the New owner list open.

Step 4: choose which package the site goes on

  1. In Step 2 of 2, click the Package list. Each package shows how much room it has left, for example "0 of 5 websites used".
  2. Pick a package with room.
  3. Click Transfer ownership.
Step 2 of the Transfer website ownership window, choosing a package in the new owner's account.

Step 5: check it worked

When the window closes, look at the Organization column on the Websites page. It should now show the new owner.

The Websites page after the transfer, with the website now listed under its new owner.

After the move

  • If the site used Cloudflare, connect it again.
  • Check that email is working for the new owner.
  • Let both customers know it's done, and update your billing if needed.
